Talking Hearts

On a daily basis I am grounded by my children. Somehow they instinctively know when to be the most poignant. Last week when my four year old dropped his latest anchor on me, I went scrambling for the manila folder stuffed with papers of various sizes and colors, all with the familiar hen scratch handwriting I'm ashamed to say is my own. It took a while to locate, and longer to decipher, but it pulled me through years of memories and inspired me to write this post...

"I wish me and my mom could fly, but I don't have the right stuff. I need feathers."
~ Three

"Mama, is Grammy dad's mom?" Yes, I said. Four thought about this for a moment and then asked, "So why does he live with us?"
~ Four

Four saw a For Sale sign decorating an empty field and asked why it was there. After listening to my explanation he asked, "How can you buy the earth?"
~ Four

"Mama, I love you." I love you, too. "I love cuddling with you." I love cuddling with you, too. "Mama, I can't remember the day we fell in love."
~ Four

"Mama, you know what one of the best things about being a kid is?....You can close your eyes in the car and don't have to look where you're going."
~ Five

"Mama, can you marry more than one person?" After hearing my response, his eyes welled up with tears, which he wiped away with two clenched fists and then he said, "I just like all of my girlfriends, and I don't think I can make that decision."
~ Six
